Faster agglomeration of key elements in the film industry
Alongside the faster agglomeration of key elements in the film industry, 2017 has seen Shanghai’s film industry attaining many remarkable achievements. Data published by the Department of Film of the former State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) shows that China’s total box office attained about RMB 55.91 billion in 2017, up 13.45% year on year; Shanghai’s total box office in the same year set a new record, reaching around RMB 3.5 billion, while films produced by Shanghai pulled in nearly RMB 5 billion, the most takings ever. 13 films made by Shanghai won a total of 24 Chinese and international awards, reaching a new high in terms of the number of awards received.
Transformation of the media industry generated notable outcomes
Jiefang Daily and the news center of Shanghai Media Group (SMG) have strengthened their reform and innovation strategy, in an effort to explore how they will build a new type of mainstream media. The Jiefang Daily adopted an integrated operating mechanism by restructuring its internal processes of news collection and editing. SMG has set up an integrated media center, which has resulted in the brands created, including “Knews” (a news website) and “AJMIDE”, seeing growth in both their levels of influence and communication ability. AJMIDE is an interaction-focused platform that offers social networking services, running over 7,000 online communities and providing with Chinese audience with over 7,000 programs from more than 60 provincial radio and TV stations across China.
Fast growing art market
In 2017, art exhibitions in Shanghai made a big leap in both quantity and quality, and exhibitions like the Shanghai Biennale, Shanghai Art Fair, ART021, and the West Bund Art & Design all performed well and gained prominence by word of mouth. Last September, Christie’s held its Shanghai Autumn Auctions. The two themed auctions – “First Open | Shanghai” and “20th Century and Contemporary Art”– together achieved a combined total of RMB 98,580,000, a 35% increase on the previous year’s autumn sales. In addition, several art agglomerations have emerged in Shanghai, including M50, Red Town, Tianzifang, Wujiaochang, etc, which together cover an area of 116,000 square meters, accommodating over 400 art organizations.
