Népszabadság, the most widely distributed political daily newspaper in Hungary, is operated by Népszabadság Rt. and provides various news covering politics, economy, culture, sports, cars, food, and editorials. It first came out on November 2, 1956, when the newly founded Magyar Szocialista Munkáspárt issued the first issue of Népszabadság. Its predecessor was The Free People, the mouthpiece of the ruling party, which was stopped during the Hungarian Event, and taken over by Népszabadság, which became the Central Party newspaper during the Kadar administration. On October 8, 1989, Népszabadság became an independent socialist daily. In 1994, the “socialist” was deleted.
