UL’s services are all based on practice. Over the years, UL has been a staunch supporter of the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) program. UL became a ZDHC accredited trainer in 2017, and since then, experts at UL have been providing training for brands and suppliers in chemical management, chemical hazards and risk assessment, and minimizing environmental footprint by reducing discharge and improving treatment of wastewater. These trainings are interactive with case studies. Moreover, the development of the Chinese economy and its growing market for consumer goods have provided huge opportunities for foreign brands and retailers to operate in the Chinese market. To support the development of these companies, UL develops a new manual of Guo Biao (China’s National Standards) to help brands, buyers and manufacturers better understand the Chinese market, including consumer policies, quality requirements and standards, regulatory requirements and the recall system.
UL’s Testing Service based on Guo Biao (China’s National Standard) helps enhance foreign companies’ understanding of the Chinese market, promote Chinese standards for consumer goods, and improve product safety. As one of the benefactors of charities in Shanghai, UL has been providing charitable programs for local communities and consumers, teaching about product quality and safety and improving the market environment.
In 2018, UL launched a new verifier capacity in Asia to assist with SAC verifications. Meanwhile, in collaboration with amfori’s BEPI, UL’s Responsible Sourcing has expanded its service scope to environmental and chemical product management and auditing. In January 2019, UL’s Consumer and Retail Services attended toy industry tradeshows, discussing the trending news of the industry and quality and safety solutions with manufacturers, consumers and retailers.
In the future, based on its presence in the five largest consumer goods markets, i.e. Asia, Africa, America, Europe and the Middle East, UL will actively participate in the Belt and Road Initiative, strengthen communication with export companies, and help clients adjust to regulatory updates and market trends and eventually become the winner in global competition.
