It has the TV Play Production License (Class A) and licenses to broadcast or stream videos online, and was among the Top Ten Shanghai Cultural Enterprises of 2015. The company holds and has shares in nine subsidiaries, and the chairman of the board Mr. Ma Zhongjun was recognized as a Distinguished Producer of Twenty Years Standing in China’s TV play industry.
Every year the company creates four to five TV plays (about 160 episodes altogether) for production and distribution. Representative works include Happy Memories of the Ma’s, the new version of the Journey to the West, Qingmang, A Grasshopper, The Journey of Flower, The Mystic Nine, and Princess Agents, to name but a few. The company has many hits plays every year and has won awards both in China and internationally, particularly for The Journey of Flower – the first Chinese TV play with more than 20 billion hits. After going viral across China and even the world, it ranked top in an audience rating of Chinese weekly TV plays. Created in 2013, Happy Memories of the Ma’s chronicled the life of an ordinary Shanghai family experiencing tremendous changes in the wave of reforms from the 1980s until the early 21st century. The play was broadcast on Vietnam Television as the New Year’s show. It was the first TV play about everyday life in contemporary China to be seen on a mainstream Vietnamese broadcasting platform and also the first to come top in audience ratings for the same time slot.
The company and its subsidiaries place great emphasis on creating high-quality products, developing valuable IP resources, and trying out new types of subject matter. In 2017, the Princess Agents produced by its subsidiary company – Shanghai Mitao Media Ltd – received 40 billion hits when it was broadcast. It won Play of the Year in the Weibo TV Influence Ceremony in 2017 and the Golden Oak Award by Asian-American TV & Film Alliance as an excellent TV play. The play was also broadcast on YouTube and became a viral hit, with more than 230 million viewers. Meanwhile, new media has expanded overseas to cover countries and regions in Southeast Asia, Europe, North America, and Oceania.
New TV plays like Speed & Youth, A Magic Story and Liang Sheng, Could We Refuse Sorrow, will be broadcast in 2018, which are bound to be next big hits on TV and online.
