Taking the Lead to Make China’s Academic Achievements Known to the World
Founded in 1983, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Press (SJTU Press) has become one of the fastest growing publishers in China after more than 30 years of development.
Following on from China’s launch of the Belt and Road (B&R) Initiative, SJTU Press is working to meet the relevant needs of readers in countries in this region. The copyrights have been secured for Xi Jinping: Wit and Vision (Selected Quotations and Commentary) to be published in English, Japanese, Korean, Albanian and Arabic, with the arrangements made by SJTU Press. In January 2016, SJTU Press held the launch ceremony for the English edition of this book at the New Delhi World Book Fair, India. At the Prague International Book Fair held in May of the same year, the book was added to the permanent collection of the Strahov Library in the Czech Republic. In November that year, the book was unveiled at a book fair held in Romania. This book has become an important window for people in these countries to learn more about Xi Jinping's governing ideas and style of communication.
In the field of academic publishing, SJTU Press actively explores cooperation with countries in the B&R region. Since 2014, through book fairs, forums and visits, we have established long-term partnerships with major publishers in B&R countries to trade copyrights and work together to publish a series of academic publications in local languages. We have exported and co-published a batch of professional academic publications in local languages. Among them, some were selected as recipients for funding from the Translation Funding for the B&R Book Program Project, including Behaviors of Trace Metals in Environment (English version, exported to Singapore), A History of Chinese Science and Technology (Arabic version, exported to Egypt), Standardization Training for Hospitalists - Pediatric demo cases (English version, exported to India), Buddhist Monastery South of the Yangtze, (English version, exported to India), History of Chinese Medicine (Thai version, exported to Thailand).

As a new highlight for exporting publications to other countries, in November 2017, the China-South Asia Science and Technology Publishing Center (which was jointly established by SJTU Press and the NCBA of India) was included into the fourth phase (2017) of B&R Book Program (2017) – the International Cooperation Publishing Project. This makes SJTU Press the first publisher in Shanghai to be selected for the project. With target customers such as publishers, academic institutions, universities, libraries and advanced manufacturing industries in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and other South Asian countries, it publishes books in English that mainly focus on introducing major scientific and technological achievements of China in fields such as large aircraft, manned spaceflight, shipbuilding and deep-sea development technologies, and translational medicine. It also acts as an information and service platform for science and technology publication and copyright trade.
SJTU seeks to promote cultural exchanges with B&R countries through in-depth and comprehensive international publishing exchanges and cooperation, facilitating the “going global” of China’s publishing industry and enhancing the international influence of Chinese academic achievements.
