Shanghai Modern Theatre Company
Established with the approval of the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film & TV, the Shanghai Modern Theatre Company was the first producer-centred experimental theatre group set up after the reform of the literary and art system in the early 1990s. Established in 1993, and mainly run by producers and project managers, the theatre company has arranged several performances as a commercial enterprise, featuring renowned performing artists, movie stars and emerging artists. Over 18 years, it has produced over 90 plays and operas. Favoured by many young audiences, it is also an art experimental base for Masters and Doctorates of Drama.
Performances by the Shanghai Modern Theatre Company often feature new versions of classic dramas with a rich flavour of urban life, modern dramas, and performances of outstanding international works. With an open style of operation, the company aims to create unique modern works for theatre. Currently the Shanghai Modern Theatre Company is the official troupe of the Shanghai Grand Theatre. With its partners, it also hosts a year-round performance of the 80-year-old "Xinguang Suspense Drama Theatre".
